Moroccan Tiles Workshop
In this inspiring fun Moroccan Tiles Workshop taking place in one of our “ Peppermint Escape “ collection, we will learn the process of making Moroccan Design Tiles known as Zellij. These activities are held in one of our eco-friendly houses:
- Peppermint Escape-The Medina: Our 11th-century old house is located in the heart of the Marrakech Medina and just a few steps away from the colorful Souks and the Jewel of the Moroccan architectural design: The Mederssa Ben Youssef.
- Peppermint Escape-The Nature: A friendly house in the outskirts of Marrakech built in the middle of nature near the ancient archaeological town of Aghmat about 30Km away facing the beautiful Atlas mountains.
From molding, shaping, cutting, chiseling, and painting, this atelier will take you on an educational learning journey where are used lots of geometry, imagination, and creativity. Real training for the brain, fingers, and hands.

A bit Of History about Moroccan Tiles
It is believed that the Moroccan tiles known as Zellij were developed in parallel with the establishment of the Idrissid family: The first Moroccan monarchy who used the Roman town of Volubilis as the capital before founding Fez to serve as the premier Moroccan Royal capital.
Before the Idrissids, the Romans excelled in mosaics. In fact, these beautiful mosaics are still preserved in Volubilis but the remaining are still existing in Sala Colonia ( Chellah ), Tamuda, and other spots where they settled in Morocco.
First, Moroccan Zellij started as a royal tiling to decorate floor palaces, around arches, walls in setting and reception areas, fountains, gates. After it extends to ornate impressive mosques in ancient Medinas, mausoleums, street fountains, administrative buildings, and then to noble and rich families.
Nowadays, Moroccan families who can afford it use the Zellij for their villas. We still have thousands of artisans who are still doing the same work as in the old-time who thankfully still contribute to the popularity of the Moroccan Tiles in the world.
