Atlas Mountains: Facts

The Atlas Mountains covers about 10% of the Moroccan land. A rich area with Fauna, Flora and local life. They make a geographical barrier between green farming land in central and north, and very dry South and the Sahara desert.

The highest peak is called Toubkal and is 4167 meters high. In winters the snow covers a great part of it and the temperature can drop to zero or even less. The melted snow feeds the rivers, lakes, water tables as well as artificial reservoirs and dams to supply the local populations with drinking water and to generate electricity in hydroelectric technology.

The chain is rich with minerals such as silver, magnesium, zinc, copper, cobalt, stone salt and gold. It also contributes to fruits like nuts, apples, figs, peach, apricots, quince…
